Flu Vaccine in India: Who Should Get It?
Health Hub · Consumer Health
IAP and WHO guidance on who benefits most from annual vaccination.
Is the flu vaccine the same as a cold vaccine?
No. Influenza (flu) is caused by influenza viruses; ordinary colds can be caused by many other viruses. The flu vaccine targets influenza and cannot prevent every cough or cold. It can, however, lower the risk of flu and its serious complications. [1,2]
Who should consider vaccination most strongly?
The World Health Organization highlights pregnant women, older adults, health workers and people with certain chronic medical conditions as priority groups. Children are also an important group to consider. If you have asthma, diabetes, heart or lung disease, or another long-term condition, discuss flu vaccination with your clinician. [1]
What does the Indian Academy of Pediatrics say?
The IAP’s 2025 immunisation schedule update, published in 2026, is a current India-specific reference for paediatric advice. Earlier IAP guidance recommended annual inactivated influenza vaccination for children from six months through five years. Parents should confirm the current age-based schedule and vaccine formulation with their paediatrician rather than rely on an old chart. [3,4]
Why every year?
Influenza viruses change, vaccine formulations are updated, and protection can decrease over time. Annual vaccination helps maintain protection. The best timing in India can differ by region and influenza circulation; ask your clinician about the locally appropriate season and product. [1,2]
Does everyone need one dose?
Not always. Young children receiving flu vaccination for the first time, or with an incomplete vaccination history, may need two doses separated by at least four weeks. Vaccine type, age approvals and dosing should be confirmed by a healthcare professional. Flu vaccines are not given to babies under six months. [2,5]
The takeaway
Flu vaccination is especially important for people at higher risk of complications. Ask your doctor or paediatrician which annual vaccine is appropriate for you and your family; it is protection against influenza, not every respiratory infection.
