Cough Medicines & Antibiotics: What to Do and What to Avoid

Cough Care · Medications & Antibiotics
Understanding the importance of cough & cold medicines medications and antibiotic use.

Are you aware that cough is the leading reason for children and adults to visit a doctor in India. It affects around 5–10% of patients in primary care settings.

The patient journey to find the right treatment for a cough can vary in India from person to person, as cough has many possible causes.

Most coughs get better on their own

In India, many people initially manage a cough on their own using home remedies or over-the-counter medicines. In most cases, coughs and colds are caused by viral infections and improve on their own with time.

School-aged children: Recover within a week

Younger children: Recover in two weeks

Saline nasal drops or nasal spray: Usually helps with a blocked nose.

Using OTC cold & cough medicines for kids

While OTC cough & cold medicines are easily available, they may contain multiple ingredients, increasing the risk of accidental overdose in children.

Your child may be at risk if:

  • They receive more than the recommended dose.
  • The medicine is given too frequently.
  • They take more than one product containing the same ingredient.
  • Adult medicines are given instead of child-specific formulations.

It is important to give your child cough & cold medicines only as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.

Let’s look at some common medicines you may come across when managing a cough or cold.

Vitamins: Are They Really Needed?

Vitamin supplements cannot treat symptoms of a cold. They are not effective for preventing infection. Hence, they are not recommended as cough & cold medicines.

Speak to your doctor if you are concerned or want more information.

Homeopathy: Know before you buy

When shopping at a pharmacy or online, you may come across products for children that are advertised as homeopathic cough remedy.

These products are often labelled as containing very small amounts of highly diluted substances. Some contain active drug ingredients at levels far higher than those stated on the label, which could pose a significant risk to children.

Some homeopathic cough remedy products have been associated with serious risks in children.

Antibiotics: Not every cough needs one

You need to understand that most coughs and colds are caused by viruses. And because antibiotics work against bacteria, not viruses, they usually won’t help a viral cold or cough to get better faster.

Many children receive unnecessary medications, like antibiotics for cough and cold, or conditions related to breathing problems. Too much antibiotic use can make infections harder to treat, increase health problems, raise healthcare costs, and cause side effects.

Medicines can help when needed—but the right medicine, dose, and duration matter. Always follow your doctor’s advice to treat symptoms safely and effectively.

Don’t just treat the cough, understand it. Choose the right care for your child.
